PLASMA ION NITRIDING
What Happens Below the Surface
Plasma ion nitriding modifies the surface of the base material through diffusion rather than applying a conventional coating. The process develops a hardened compound zone and diffusion zone while preserving the underlying material.
A simplified view of the surface before and after plasma ion nitriding, showing the development of the compound zone and diffusion zone above the base material.
TREATMENT RESULTS
Engineered Surface Performance
Treatment parameters are developed around the material, component geometry, and performance requirements of each application.
Improved Surface Hardness
Plasma nitriding creates a hardened working surface while maintaining the properties of the underlying component.
Controlled Case Development
Process parameters can be tailored to achieve the surface characteristics and case requirements appropriate for the application.
Minimal Dimensional Change
Relatively low processing temperatures help preserve component geometry and critical dimensional requirements.
